My name is Sherwin Calaluan, a husband, a father and a freelance photographer. I trained in Hotel and Restaurant Management and after earning a degree in 2006 in the Philippines, I came to Canada to work at the Fairmont Banff Springs Hotel. I didn’t plan on becoming a photographer. But it had become apparent within the first few months of my arrival in Canada that the beauty that surrounds me on a daily basis was inspiring me to take my appreciation for the stunning sceneries a step further. From the moment I bought my first camera and documented the changing, rugged landscapes in the mountains and the wildlife that they host, I was hooked. That’s when my career in photography started.
I have expanded my subject to include the fascinating northern lights. Recently, I have been focussing on landscape photography. I enjoy capturing the wide expanse of a scenic view. I am deeply engaged in learning skills and acquiring techniques that help me constantly grow as a photographer and to be more successful in the ever-competitive world of photography.
Currently, I have a Nikon D800 and use Nikkor glass (16-35mm F4) for my landscape photography, Nikkor 50mm F1.8g and recently just purchased Nikkor 85mm F1.4g, SB900 Flash to get into the portraiture. Filter glass is a must in all of my landscape photography to balance the exposure of the foreground and sky to capture best dramatic scene of sunrise/sunset moment. The combination of Lee Filter holder, Format Hitech Firecrest solid 6 stop Neutral Density Filter and Sighray Galen Rowell 3 stop Soft Edges Graduated Neutral Density are always in my bag, i can’t shoot without this filters. To get the sharpness of the image i need a trusted tripod, I’m using Benro FTA29CV1Travel Angel with V1E Ball head, lightweight and lots of functionality specially in a low angel shots.
Promaster remote shutter release and cable to extend the time capturing the beauty of nature. To put all this gear in one place i’m using Lowepro Pro Runner 350 AW, lots of compartment on this bag and weather resistant even in the extreme weather. Without all of these gear and materials my ambition to be a photographer would be just a dream.
